The Art of the Party: Lessons from My Mami
Growing up, I was fortunate to witness the magic of party planning through my mom's incredible skills. Her ability to transform any occasion into a memorable event was nothing short of awe inspiring. As I embarked on my journey to create my own event planning business, I realized that the lessons I learned from her have become the foundation of my work with clients. In this blog post, I want to share the three key lessons my mom taught me about crafting unforgettable events, and how they continue to inspire me today.
It’s Not Just About You
One of the most valuable lessons my mom imparted was the importance of prioritizing the guest experience. While it might be tempting to focus solely on personal preferences, an event truly shines when guests feel valued and appreciated. My mom taught me that the heart of any celebration lies in creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and engaged. This means considering the needs and interests of guests, from the music and food to the ambiance and activities. When planning an event, I always strive to put myself in the shoes of the attendees, ensuring that their experience is as joyful and memorable as possible.
Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail
Another key lesson my mom instilled in me was the significance of early preparation. Her meticulous attention to detail and organization was the backbone of every successful party she hosted. By planning ahead, she ensured that everything ran smoothly, allowing her to fully enjoy the celebration. She was also a skillful delegator- everyone had a role to play in making the event successful (I stuffed more party bags than I can remember in my day!). This approach has become a cornerstone of my own event planning philosophy. I believe that thorough preparation not only minimizes stress but also allows for flexibility and creativity. With a solid plan in place, I can focus on infusing joy and personality into each event, ensuring that every detail aligns with the client's vision.
Find and Maximize the Joy
A significant aspect of my mom's party planning prowess was her ability to infuse creativity and personalization into every event. She had a knack for incorporating unique themes, custom decorations, and thoughtful touches that made each celebration stand out. Decades later, people still rave about these parties and I hold these memories close to me. This creativity not only delighted guests but also made them feel special and appreciated. In my own work, I strive to carry forward this tradition of personalization, tailoring each event to reflect the host's personality and preferences. Whether it's a custom playlist, personalized favors, or a unique theme, these elements add an extra layer of joy and meaning to the celebration.
As I reflect on the lessons my mom taught me about party planning, I am filled with gratitude for the foundation she provided. Her emphasis on guest experience, early preparation, and the joy of celebration continues to guide my work with clients. By carrying forward her legacy, I strive to create events that not only meet but exceed expectations, leaving a lasting impact on all who attend.

Mari
